Catherine Ford was raised in Bloomsbury by her maternal grandparents and mother. As a child Ford experienced anxiety related to an obsessional-compulsive condition. Ford began acting during her teens, and was an actor in the National Youth Theatre. After being accepted at the Sylvia Young Theatre School for only a few days but Ford realized this was not the best place for her. Ford was then able to apply for a place in the Central School of Speech and Drama and received an acceptance on her fourth attempt. Shaun Dingwall played Pete Tyler in Doctor Who. Ford was able to graduate in 1993, but she made her television debut in the 1992 episode Surgical Spirit. She adopted the name Catherine Tate. Tate was a part of such programs on television including The Bill, Men Behaving Badly and London Burning. The regular theatre work she performed brought her into The Royal Shakespeare Company, for the 2000-2001 Season. Tate gained recognition as a stand-up comedian and has been added to her repertoire in 1996.
